Houston 5 November (Argus) — US farmers have harvested 95pc of this year's drought-stricken corn crop as a tough growing season draws to a close.

Growers in the 18 states that produce all but 6pc of the US crop had nearly completed harvests, including major corn states Iowa, Illinois and Indiana, according to the latest survey by the US Department of Agriculture.

A historic drought blanketing the US corn belt sharply reduced the amount of corn to be harvested this year and spiked prices for the crop that remains, speeding farmers to record-pace harvest completions.

Iowa and Illinois farmers had harvested 98pc of the crop in their respective states as of 4 November compared to five-year averages of 69pc and 77pc for the same week, according to the survey. Indiana farmers had harvested 89pc of their crop, compared to a five year average of 74pc.

Missouri — hit particularly hard by this year's drought — Minnesota and South Dakota had finished their harvests entirely, today's report said.
