The Village Board of Oak Park, Illinois, has enacted the first ban on natural gas connections in the US Midwest, amending its building code to require only electric power in new commercial and residential construction.

The ordinance bans all fossil fuel energy in new buildings, with exceptions for commercial kitchens and backup power generators.

The ban aims to reduce carbon emissions from buildings, which make up over 70pc of the town's total emissions, according to Oak Park's village board. The ordinance is to take effect on 1 January.

Oak Park is the first municipality in the Midwest to ban gas connections in new construction, according to the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA).

Berkeley, California, in 2019 became the first city in the US to prohibit gas service in new buildings. Other US towns and cities have followed, citing it as an attempt to curb greenhouse gas emissions, while New York in May became the first state to ban gas in new buildings, starting in 2026.

States including Texas, Arizona, Louisiana and others have enacted preemptive measures to block local governments from prohibiting gas or propane use.

Illinois in 2021 enacted a law requiring the state to decarbonize its electricity supply by 2050, including a phase out of gas-fired generation.
