Indian conglomerate Adani raised thermal coal output and sales at its Carmichael mine in Australia during April-June, compared with a year earlier.

The company produced 3.1mn t of coal during the quarter, up by 7pc on the year, Adani Enterprises said on 29 July. Sales increased by 17pc on the year to 2.7mn t of coal over April-June.

Output and sales both also rose on the quarter, from 1.9mn t and 2.1mn t respectively in January-March. The Carmichael mine produced 11.4mn t of thermal coal in the April 2025-March 2026 fiscal year, down by about 11pc from the record 12.9mn t produced in 2024-25. Sales eased by 8pc on the year to 11.5mn t in 2025-26.

The sales growth comes alongside a sharp year-on-year increase in seaborne coal prices across origins during the quarter. Argus-assessed Australian NAR 5,500 kcal/kg coal averaged $96.39/t fob Newcastle during April-June, up by 41pc from the same quarter of 2025. This market was last assessed at $93.73/t fob Newcastle on 24 July.

The Carmichael mine is around 500km inland from the Abbot Point coal port, which is also owned by Adani. Carmichael coal has an average calorific value of around NAR 4,950 kcal/kg, lower than the standard 5,500-6,000 kcal/kg coal produced in Australia's Hunter Valley and Bowen basin.

Coal trading volumes pressured

Adani, which is also India's largest thermal coal importer and trading firm, posted a sharp drop of 35pc in coal sales over April-June compared with a year earlier, in line with a broader decline in the country's receipts.

The company's coal trading division sold 8.3mn t during April-June compared with 12.8mn t a year earlier. Volumes during April-June were also down on the quarter from 9.3mn t in January-March.

The decline in Adani's sales during the quarter was more pronounced than the drop in India's total imports. The country's thermal coal imports eased by about 20pc on the year to 38.97mn t April-June, according to data from shipping agency Interocean.

Adani's coal trading business mainly caters to the needs of India's private-sector and government-owned utilities. The trading firm participates in tenders issued by these utilities. Adani had earlier attributed the decline to higher domestic coal availability.
