Israeli fertilizer producer ICL has signed a five-year potash supply agreement with Indian importer IPL.

ICL in New Delhi last week agreed to supply a firm 550,000 t/yr and an optional 50,000 t/yr for the July 2019-June 2020 period. A similar volume will also be supplied during 2020-21.

The volume will increase to a firm 600,000 t/yr and an optional 50,000 t/yr during 2021-23.

Prices will be determined by the prevailing market factors in India at the time of supply.

"This is the first time we have signed a long-term agreement for the supply of potash in India, which represents a strategic market for ICL," said the president of ICL's potash division Noam Goldstein.

ICL was the most cost-competitive supplier to India because of geographical proximity, Goldstein said, which resulted in major logistical advantages, including lower transportation costs and reduced time to market compared with its competitors.
