The start up of the onshore 50,000 b/d Tempa Rossa oil field in Basilicata, southern Italy, has been delayed again.

Total had said in October that the field was technically ready to start up and it was waiting for the final go-ahead from local authorities, but authorisation is still pending.

Deliveries of the heavy sour crude to integrated Eni's 84,000 b/d Taranto refinery could be delayed into the second quarter of this year. Taranto underwent extensive upgrading work last summer to enable it to process Tempa Rossa, which would boost bitumen output.

Eni is continuing to buy spot cargoes of crude to keep the refinery running until Tempa Rossa deliveries begin.

Total operates the field with a 50pc share. Shell and Japan's Mitsui each holds a 25pc stake. As well as crude the field will have a plateau production of 230,000 m³/d of gas and 240 t/d of LPG.
