UAE extends Covid-19 curfew as infections keep rising

The UAE is extending its nightly curfew by two hours in response to an upturn in Covid-19 cases since the second week of May.

The curfew — implemented as part of what the UAE has dubbed its "national disinfection programme" — will now run from 20:00 in the evening to 06:00 in the morning, starting on 20 May until further notice. The current curfew, which runs from 22:00 to 06:00, was originally meant to last for the entire duration of the fasting month of Ramadan, which started on 24 April.

Shopping centres and malls will be open from 09:00 to 19:00 starting from tomorrow, with new opening hours to be announced after the four-day Eid al-Fitr holiday, which begins on 23 May.

Retail stores, food shops, supermarkets and pharmacies will be allowed to continue working 24 hours a day, on the condition that they adhere to health and safety guidelines such as working at a maximum 30pc capacity and avoiding overcrowding.

The government has also reviewed and updated regulations governing violations and has increased fines for those caught flouting the rules.

As of yesterday, the UAE had recorded 24,190 coronavirus cases, up by 86pc from the start of the month, with 224 deaths.

Other countries in the Mideast Gulf region have also tightened restrictions in an effort to slow the spread of the virus. Saudi Arabia will go into lockdown over the Eid al-Fitr holiday, while Kuwait and Oman have both extended their respective lockdowns until the end of May.

The limitations on movement and public gatherings are weighing heavily on transport fuel demand in the region, with gasoline and jet fuel consumption suffering the biggest hit.
