Kuwait will implement a three-phase plan to gradually resume commercial flights in and out of Kuwait International Airport (KIA) after a near three-month hiatus. Details on the timings of the phases has yet to be announced.
KIA will operate at 30pc capacity in the first phase, 60pc in the second, and at full capacity in the third phase.
The country suspended all international flights to and from KIA on 13 March in an effort to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, with the exception of repatriation flights and air cargo. Kuwaiti nationals, their first-degree relatives, and their accompanying domestic workers were allowed to book flights back to the country from 30 May.
This cut directly into air travel demand, and resulted in a 70pc loss in jet fuel consumption in Kuwait between March and April. For comparison, Kuwait's jet fuel demand averaged 11,500 b/d in March and April last year, according to data from the Joint Organizations Data Initiative (Jodi).
Consumption averaged 16,600 b/d last year.
