TPC Group is running full production of gasoline additive MTBE at its chemical complex on the Houston Ship Channel, according to market sources.
MTBE capacity at TPC Group's site is 450,000 t/y. Total US MTBE operating capacity is estimated to be at 60-65pc, according to Argus Consulting, a division of Argus Media. That is up from 50pc in May.
TPC Group suspended production at the plant in April amid tumbling MTBE spot prices, as efforts to contain Covid-19 stifled fuel demand. US MTBE spot prices dropped in April and May to the lowest in nearly two decade, valued around the low 60¢/USG range, as demand from Mexico, the primary outlet for US-produced MTBE, eroded amid the pandemic.
With the global economy recovering, US MTBE prices have regained momentum, assessed at 112¢/USG on 5 June as US suppliers eye exports. With Europe and Asia assessed around 135¢/USG, the arbitrage from the US Gulf coast is open on paper.
