Oman ends nationwide night-time curfew

The Omani authorities have completely lifted a three-week nationwide curfew as it looks to ease the country back to normality following a dramatic fall in the number of new daily Covid-19 infections in recent weeks.

The overnight ban on movement was fully lifted yesterday, three weeks after it was re-imposed on 25 July, ahead of the Islamic Eid al-Adha holiday, banning all movement between 19:00 and 06:00. The authorities eased the curfew by three hours last week, and lifted the country-wide ban on movement between province which had also been in place since 25 July.

Dhofar, the sultanate's largest governorate, was placed under full lockdown in mid-June after a disproportionately high number of Covid-19 cases were reported there. The lockdown was extended in mid-July indefinitely. It is as yet unclear what this latest directive means for Dhofar.

The move comes as daily new infections in the country have dropped significantly to an average of 223 in the last seven days, versus 1,371 in the seven days prior to the lockdown measures being reimposed on 25 July. But this may be down to a change in the country's testing policies - namely a scaling back of testing for those with what the health ministry consider to be 'mild symptoms.' Testing numbers have fallen by around 50-65pc since late July.

This latest easing of restrictive measures will almost certainly provide a lift for transport fuel demand in Oman.

At the height of the lockdowns in April, domestic 95R gasoline sales fell to 17,200 b/d, down by 43pc from March, according to Oman's National Centre of Statistics and Information. Gasoil sales fell by around 10pc over the same period to 34,800 b/d.

But Oman's fuel demand recovered in June to near pre-pandemic levels, despite the reintroduction of lockdowns in select areas in the middle of the month. Domestic 95R gasoline sales rose to 32,280 b/d in June, only 6pc lower than 34,470 b/d in the same month last year. Gasoil sales also increased, reaching 38,160 b/d in June, only 3pc lower than sales in June 2019.
