Oman extends Covid-19 restrictions indefinitely

Oman has extended ongoing restrictions aimed at combating the spread of Covid-19 in the sultanate "until further notice". The decision comes on the back of a sustained rise in daily coronavirus cases since the middle of last month and could keep Oman's demand for transport fuels suppressed.

The authorities announced over the weekend that it will extend the closure of all beaches and public parks across the country until further notice in hopes of limiting public gatherings.

All commercial entities in the North Sharqiyah governorate, south of Muscat, will also continue to operate on reduced hours - from 06:00 to 19:00 daily - until further notice, albeit with an exception for gas stations, pharmacies and health institutions.

These measures were first imposed on 11 February for an initial two weeks. But the worsening Covid-19 situation prompted the indefinite extension. Average daily new Covid-19 case numbers have risen to 250 so far in February, up from 176 in January. Oman has registered a total of 140,588 infection cases and 1,562 deaths to date.

"It is unfortunate that from mid-January until now, the numbers have been escalating and the number of in-patients has begun to take a dangerous turn," Oman's health minister Dr Ahmed al-Saidi said late last week. "Within a period of less than two months, the number of patients we have in intensive care has increased to 70 versus 20 before."

Oman also recently imposed new flight restrictions and banned passengers from 10 countries last week, while the country's land borders, which have been closed since 18 January, also remain shut.

These extended restrictions could weigh on transport fuel demand in the country. According to the latest data from Oman's National Centre for Statistics and Information, domestic gasoil demand fell by around 4pc to 34,000 b/d in January month-on-month, but gasoline demand edged up by 1pc to 60,000 b/d over the same period. Jet fuel demand, however, rose to 4,110 b/d in January, 27pc up from a month earlier, after Oman Air added more flight destinations.
