Shell to trial hydrogen fuel cells for Singapore ships

Shell is planning to trial the use of hydrogen fuel cells for ships through a feasibility study in Singapore.

The success of the trial, which Shell described as the first of its kind for both the company and Singapore, could "help pave the way for cleaner, hydrogen-powered shipping", it said today. Hydrogen with fuel cells may be the zero-emissions technology with the "greatest potential" to help the shipping sector achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, the company said.

Shell has been touting alternative fuel cells as the technology with the biggest potential to achieve zero emissions from marine fuels since last year. Fuel cells can operate currently using LNG.

The trial will involve developing and installing a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell auxiliary power unit on an existing roll-on/roll-off vessel, which carries equipment to Shell's 500,000 b/d Pulao Bukom refinery on one of Singapore's outlying islands. Shell hopes to install the fuel cell next year, and to assess the vessel's operations for a period of 12 months.

Singapore-based shipbuilders Sembcorp Marine and its wholly owned subsidiary LMG Marin, as well as Penguin International, are partnering with Shell for the feasibility study.

The project "holds exciting possibilities for decarbonisation in the marine and energy industry", Sembcorp Marine president and chief executive Wong Weng Sun said.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore welcomed the initiative, which it said "complements efforts in Singapore to come up with commercially viable solutions to decarbonise the industry".

Shell in November last year outlined a 10-year plan to cut its CO2 emissions in Singapore by about a third within a decade. And it outlined plans in February to reduce its global net carbon intensity by 6-8pc by 2023, 20pc by 2030 and 45pc by 2035, all compared with 2016 levels. The company has said it wants to become a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050.
