Argus Eurobob gasoline volumes reached a six-month high of 431,100t in August, up from 293,000t in July and 370,000t a year earlier. Demand for the benchmark oxy grade nearly doubled on the month as the peak summer driving season drew to a close, while non-oxy volumes were largely stable.

A total of 297,000t of Eurobob oxy barges changed hands on prompt Argus dates in August, from 155,000t in July and 299,000t a year earlier. Eurobob oxy volumes for the year to date total 2mn t, down from 2.1mn t in the first eight months of last year — and 32pc lower than the same period in 2019.

BP secured its largest volume since October last year, at 116,000t of Eurobob oxy barges in August, up from 20,000t in July. Varo purchased its most in a single month since the end of 2019 at 48,000t, up from 23,000t a month earlier.

ExxonMobil and Gunvor each purchased 20,000t or above. BMV Mineral, Hartree, Litasco, Mabanaft, Shell, Sahara, TotalEnergies, Trafigura and Vitol bought the remaining volumes.

Sahara Energy traded its first ever Eurobob barges, buying and selling 4,000t of oxy gasoline in August.

TotalEnergies was the largest seller, parting with 145,000t in August, up from 32,000t in July. Shell sold 62,000t, from nothing the previous month. And BP sold 37,000t, from 2,000t in July. The remaining volumes were sold by Hartree, Litasco, Sahara, Trafigura and Vitol.

Eurobob non-oxy barge volumes eased on the month to 134,100t from 138,000t in July. Volumes in the first eight months of the year totalled 883,000t, up from 664,000t last year — and just 248,000t in the same period of 2019.

Varo remained the largest buyer, but its share of the market slipped to 67pc from 87pc the previous month as overall participation increased to 16 from 12 in July. Varo bought 89,500t of non-oxy gasoline in August, from 120,000t in July. And BP and Litasco each bought 10,000t. BMV Mineral, ExxonMobil, Finco, Mabanaft, Shell, TotalEnergies and Van Raak split the remaining volumes, each buying 6,000t or less.

Gunvor sold its largest volume of non-oxy gasoline to date, with 58,000t in August, up from 6,000t in July. Shell sold 29,600t and TotalEnergies 29,000t, from 6,000t and 40,000t, respectively, the previous month. BP, ExxonMobil and Litasco sold the remaining volumes.
