South Korean petrochemical producer LG Chem and biodiesel producer Dansuk Industrial are launching a hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant in Daesan, Korea in 2024.

It will be the first plant of its kind in the country and aims to capitalise on forecasted 40pc annual global growth in renewable diesel and SAF demand to 30mn t/yr in 2025 from 6mn t/yr in 2020.

Capacity was not disclosed but the joint venture aims to maximise SAF production even as it cannot exceed 50pc of the total output, utilising mainly used cooking oil (UCO) and other waste oil feedstocks.

The plant will be one of 10 new factories at LG Chem's Daesan complex leveraging HVO to produce bio- super absorbent polymer, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and polyvinyl chloride.

LG Chem plans to expand its ISCC Plus certification verifying sustainability to more than 30 of its bio-products by the end of this year.

Dansuk also has aspirations for a second 300,000 t/yr SAF and bio-naphtha plant in 2024-25 using UCO, tallow, acid oils and palm oil mill effluent at a 72,730m² site secured at the free trade zone in Gusan.

Feasibility studies are underway for the Gunsan Saemangeum industrial complex which could also contain a green hydrogen facility by 2026 to further reduce carbon emissions.

Dansuk already produces around 300,000 t/yr of first-generation biodiesel from the same feedstocks, around 75pc of which is exported to the US and Europe, and hopes to leverage these existing supply chains to boost its portfolio for this next generation of biofuels.
