Vitol orders hybrid-electric bunker tankers: Update

Adds detail on nature of fuel and moe, all in paragraph 2

Trading firm Vitol's Singapore bunker division, V-Bunkers, has ordered two electric-hybrid bunker vessels to operate at the port's harbour before the end of 2022.

They will be designed by a Singapore-based designer and built in a Chinese shipyard, Vitol told Argus. The diesel and electric hybrid tanker, delivering conventional bunker fuels, will be the first of their kind in the port.

The tankers will have an Energy Storage System (ESS) comprising lithium-ion batteries and a Power Management System (PMS), Vitol said. The ESS will be rechargeable, although because portside electrification is unavailable in Singapore the firm will be reliant on the infrastructure being developed there.

Electrification of ships will be very limited in sea-going vessels, according to the IEA's Net‐Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario for shipping, with battery technology only viable on short routes and intra-port operations.

Vitol launched its bunker supply business, Vitol Bunkers, in May. In addition to Singapore, it has bunkering operations at the US Gulf coast, China and the UAE.
