Cincinnati moves to conserve diesel supply

Cincinnati, Ohio, is directing municipal departments to take measures to conserve the city's diesel supply because refinery maintenance in the state has disrupted fuel distribution.

Simultaneous maintenance at two Ohio refineries — Marathon Petroleum's 93,000 b/d refinery in Canton and Cenovus Energy's 175,000 b/d refinery in Lima, Ohio — has disrupted fuel supplies to the city as well as to private entities, according to a 15 November memo from city manager Paula Boggs Muething to the mayor and city council members.

The disruption has cut the municipal government's normal reserve of diesel fuel by 25pc, with approximately three weeks supply for city services remaining, not including fuel needed for a snow or flood event, Muething said. She ordered a halt to diesel fuel use for city parks and recreation functions as well as for non-essential travel. All departments are to identify functions that require diesel for the rest of the year, she said.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency told Argus that Cenovus Energy was bringing process units at its Lima refinery back online this week after a maintenance turnaround. Marathon Petroleum did not immediately responded to a request for comment on any maintenance activities at its Canton refinery.
