Malaysian state-owned oil firm Petronas subsidiary Petronas Chemicals (PCG) plans to build a 60,000 t/yr melamine plant at Gurun in Kedah state, which it said will make it the sole melamine producer in southeast Asia.

The plant is targeted to come on stream in 2024. PCG will use urea produced by its wholly-owned subsidiary Petronas Chemicals Fertiliser Kedah (PCFK) as feedstock for the plant.

"This project is in line with PCG's growth journey to expand into derivatives by adding value to the molecules from its existing products such as urea, methanol, polyolefins, and others," the firm said on 19 January.

PCFK operates a 696,000 t/yr urea unit in Gurun.

"By housing the plant within the vicinity of PCFK, we will be able to maximise the overall value through the integration of feedstock and utilities with the existing PCFK facility," said Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, PCG's managing director and chief executive officer.
