Singapore-based Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) and Copenhagen-based Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping entered a partnership today to provide further momentum to the shipping industry's decarbonisation agenda.

The two research bodies committed to a long-term strategic collaboration, driven by a joint vision to spur the maritime sector's decarbonisation goals which is set to transform the industry.

This will be achieved by sharing best practices and knowledge, with a focus on developing low- and zero-carbon technologies and delivering pilot projects, which can be deployed along "green corridors", the firms said.

Both research centres were founded recently. The GCMD commenced in August 2021 after receiving funding from several large private companies in the marine industry, while the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping was founded in 2020 and has also received funding from several corporate partners.

The International Maritime Organisation has called for the shipping industry to lower carbon emissions by at least 40pc by 2030, and preferably by 70pc by 2050, compared to 2008 levels.
