Japan's Inpex, Itochu tap renewable diesel for tankers

Japanese upstream firm Inpex and trading house Itochu are partnering on the use of renewable diesel for their domestic tanker trucks, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the transportation sector.

The companies began using renewable diesel for tanker trucks in central Japan's Hokuriku and Koshinetsu regions on 27 May, fuelling 18 trucks transporting domestic crude and refined products. This is the first example of renewable diesel being used in tanker trucks in Japan, the companies said.

Itochu has agreed with Finnish renewable fuel producer Neste to buy an unspecified volume of renewable diesel made from 100pc renewable raw materials such as waste cooking oil and animal oil. Its subsidiary Itochu Enex had established a supply chain for the transportation and refuelling the diesel in Japan. This complements Inpex's sales network in the Hokuriku and Koshinetsu regions.

Neste's renewable diesel can reduce up to 90pc of GHG emissions compared with petroleum-based diesel on a life-cycle assessment basis, according to the Japanese firms.
