UK new car sales break five months of decline in August

UK new cars sales increased on the year in August driven by growth in alternatively fuelled vehicles, breaking five consecutive months of decline.

New car sales, represented by new car registrations, rose by 1.2pc on the year to 68,858 units in August, figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show.

Growth followed five months of decline, with the previous year-on-year rise recorded in February. August is typically one of the quietest months for new car sales as buyers tend to wait for the new numberplate released in September.

"August's new car market growth is welcome, but marginal during a low volume month," SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said.

"Spiralling energy costs and inflation on top of sustained supply chain challenges are piling even more pressure on the automotive industry's post-pandemic recovery," he said. "With September traditionally a bumper time for new car uptake, the next month will be the true barometer of industry recovery."

The overall increase in the UK new car market was driven by growth in sales of battery electric vehicles, which rose by 35.4pc on the year to 10,006 units and represented 14.5pc of all vehicles sold in the month.

Plug-in hybrid and hybrid electric vehicle sales declined by 23.1pc and 0.7pc to 3,884 and 8,007 units, respectively.

Year-to-date, UK car sales stood at 983,099 units, down by 10.7pc on the year and 35.3pc lower than the first eight months in 2019.
