US naphthenic base oil margins rose to record highs during the week ended 23 September as spot prices held steady and feedstock costs fell.

The Argus domestic spot US pale oil 60 premium to four-week average WTI crude hit a record high of $106.12/bl, up from $103.67/bl the previous week. The premium remained above year-earlier levels of $78.68/bl.

The same premium to four-week average Louisiana Light Sweet (LLS) crude hit a record high of $103.71/bl, up from $101.11/bl the previous week. The premium remained above year-earlier levels of $77.27/bl.

And its premium to four-week average Brent crude hitits second-highest level ever at $99.49/bl, up from $97.03/bl the previous week. The premium remained above year-earlier levels of $75.21/bl.

The previous record high over WTI and LLS crudes, as well as the current record high over Brent crude, came during the week ended 29 July.

Naphthenic base oil spot prices have stabilized amid tight supplies and firm demand. A key refiner has experienced production issues in August and remains low on inventory. Another is limiting spot sales to build up inventory for a planned turnaround in October.

Domestic demand for naphthenic base oils remains firm, as several consumers are less affected by the persistent shortage of additives that is curbing demand for paraffinic base oils.

Export demand for naphthenic base oils is also firm, particularly to Europe. A key producer in the region shut one of its plants and also curbed supply to Latin America.

The tightness in the Latin American market is keeping demand for naphthenic base oils firm, but consumers in the region remain around $0.10-0.15/USG below domestic price levels, limiting volumes moving into the region.
