South African logistics operator Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) has lifted the force majeure notice imposed on the export coal line to Richards Bay on 10 November following a train derailment near Ulundi, the firm said today.
Normal operations on the lines can be phased in immediately on completion of the repair work, the statement said.
A 97-wagon coal train derailed on the export line to Richards Bay between Bloubank and Nhlazatshe stations on 8 November, leading to the closure of lines 1 and 2 of the North Corridor.
The firm imposed a force majuere notice as the derailment had "caused massive damage to infrastructure and rolling stocks", the statement said.
Line 1 reopened on 18 November, with the second line reopening a day later. But normal services at full capacity could not resume on the lines until repair work had been carried out.
As a result of the derailment, coal stocks at the Richards Bay Coal Terminal hit a 44-week low this week. Coal inventories fell by 11pc on the week to just 1.95mn t, the lowest volume since 24 January.
