Malaysia's urea exports were largely stable in 2022, with total exports rising slightly by 1pc on the year to 2.02mn t, according to GTT data, as substantial demand from India offset the fall in exports to southeast Asia.
Australia remained the top export destination for Malaysian urea in 2022, with exports rising by 6pc on the year to 434,700t.
Exports to southeast Asia fell on the year. Thailand was the second-largest export destination, but exports fell by 19pc to 369,500t, with the largest fall in shipments in May and June, and in the last quarter of 2022. Exports to the Philippines and Myanmar fell by 31pc and 41pc on the year to 193,000t and 70,100t, respectively. This was largely because of a year-on-year rise in delivered prices to the southeast Asian region, which led to demand destruction. Southeast Asian importers kept their exports to a minimum, contributing to the general downward trend in exports in 2022, compared to 2021.
But the fall in exports to southeast Asia was offset by the surge in exports to India. Exports to India rose by more than sixfold to 290,500t in 2022 from 44,000t a year earlier. The rise in exports was most significant in January-March when exports totalled 131,200t, compared to zero in the same period of the previous year. This rise in Indian exports in the first half of the year was likely because of Malaysian suppliers fulfilling cargoes for India's tender in December 2021, while major urea suppliers in Indonesia stayed out of the market to cater to their domestic season, and in Brunei, BFI's urea plant remained off line. Additionally, India had increased its overall urea purchases by 1.4mn t on the year to 8.4mn t in 2022, seeking more urea from major southeast Asian producers like Malaysia. Chinese export restrictions on urea curbed export availability to India, leading India to source cargoes from other suppliers.
Malaysia's exports in December totalled 191,000t, up by 50pc on the year as more deals were concluded, with some regional producers remaining out of the export market. Exports to the Philippines in December rose by 25pc on the year to 46,000t. Exports to India, Sri Lanka and Myanmar rose to 44,000t, 28,500t and 25,700t respectively, from zero the previous year. Malaysian suppliers had an export advantage in December as major producers like Pupuk Indonesia pulled back from the export market with no quota for exports remaining in 2022.
Malaysia's urea exports are likely to remain stable in the first quarter of 2023, as major producers focus on fulfilling term shipments to its usual buyers, with little availability for spot deals.
