Europe's biggest cruise ship operator Costa Group and global methanol producer Proman have entered an agreement to drive implementation of methanol as a marine fuel.
The agreement will increase supply of sustainable methanol and allow for retrofitting of Costa's existing fleet to operate on the fuel. Investment in new methanol-fueled ships will form part of the deal, Proman said.
No timeframe was given as to when retrofitting or supply will start.
Proman said that methanol is seen as an attractive fuel proposition to achieve greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions owing to the ability to retrofit and its status as one of the world's most widely traded chemicals. Costa Group has already conducted trials with other biofuels and has four ships in service able to run on LNG, another alternative marine fuel under consideration by the shipping sector as an alternative to fossil marine fuel.
