US ethanol stocks fall for third straight week: EIA

US ethanol inventories fell last week by 0.3pc, the third consecutive weekly drop, as production also declined, according to Energy Information Administration (EIA) data.

Nationwide ethanol stocks in the week ended 5 May fell to 23.3mn bl, down by by 72,000 bl from the prior week.

The US Gulf coast led the drop, falling on the week by 339,000 bl to 4.1mn bl. The draw was mitigated by the east coast, where stocks rose by 217,000 bl to 7.5mn bl, and the midcontinent, where inventories rose by 78,000 bl to 8.9mn bl.

Compared with the same week last year, stocks were down by 849,000 bl.

US ethanol production fell during the week by 11,000 b/d to 965,000 b/d, more than offsetting the previous week's gain of 9,000 b/d. Midcontinent output fell by 10,000 b/d to 912,000 b/d and Rocky Mountains production dropped by 3,000 b/d to 11,000 b/d.

Compared with the same week last year, production was down by 26,000 b/d.

Implied gasoline demand rose during the week by 685,000 b/d to 9.3mn b/d, while ethanol blending fell by 14,000 b/d to 897,000 b/d.
