US production of base oils and finished lubricants was mixed in May as a key refiner was running at full rates following an extended turnaround and the export market was weak.

Production of base oils and lubricants in May was 163,100 b/d, down by 8.9pc from year-earlier levels of 178,400 b/d, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). Production rose by 5pc from 154,900 b/d in April.

A key US Gulf Coast (USGC) refiner returned to full operating rates in May after completing and extended turnaround in April. Another key refiner build inventory for its planned maintenance outage in June.

Several other refiners were running at elevated rates as gasoline demand strengthened and diesel demand was weak. This led to more production of base oil feedstock vacuum gas oil (VGO). Attractive margins on base oils over competing fuels pushed refiners to maximize base oil output.

Base oil production fell from year-earlier levels as export demand was weaker and spot prices were lower in May 2023. This limited the ability of refiners to clear surplus volumes into the export market.

The buildup of surplus base oils following increased production from April also put downward pressure on domestic base oil values throughout May.

US paraffinic base oil production rose by 8.4pc to 137,900 b/d in May, down by 8.9pc from year-earlier levels.

USGC paraffinic production fell by 3.2pc to 112,935 b/d in May from year-earlier levels. Output rose by 13pc from 98,367 b/d in April.

Production in the Texas Gulf coast was 56,967 b/d, up by 2.0pc from 55,833 b/d in April. Production in the Louisiana Gulf coast rose to 50,483 b/d, up by 28pc from 38,200 b/d.

Paraffinic base oil production in the US Midcontinent in May was 7,354 b/d, down by 1.1pc from 7,433 b/d in April. Production in the US Atlantic coast (USAC) was 6,161 b/d, up by 23pc from April levels of 4,867 b/d.

Naphthenic base oil production in May was 25,300b/d, down by 3.8pc from 26,300 b/d in April. Production fell by 13pc from year earlier levels of 28,800 b/d.

Naphthenic production fell from April as a key producer experienced some unplanned maintenance. Production fell from year-earlier levels as there was less pressure to export volumes to cover for a global shortfall that emerged in April 2022.
