Brazil's Raizen to slow biogas expansion plan

Leading Brazilian sugar and ethanol producer Raizen is reassessing its plans to build dozens of new biogas plants as it focuses on rolling out production of its second-generation, or cellulosic, ethanol.

In May 2022, Raizen said it would accelerate investments in biogas and biomethane amid strong demand for renewable natural gas, but it is revisiting those plans, Ricardo Mussa, the chief executive of the joint venture between Shell and Brazilian energy and logistics conglomerate Cosan, said earlier this week.

"With our first biogas plant at the Bonfim mill, we were really focused on using biogas for electricity production and we concluded that was not the best option," he said.

Raizen plans to complete construction of its second biogas plant at the Costa Pinto mill but then slow investments in the segment as it assesses the best use of its sugarcane mills' biomass waste.

The firm also put plans on hold to build a new biomass-based pellets plant, Mussa said, arguing that production of both pellets and biogas competes for biomass with second-generation ethanol. Raizen is also assessing the use of second-generation ethanol to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as its demand continues to rise.

A recent company study of biogas plans concluded that only about six of Raizen's 35 sugarcane mills were sufficiently close to the infrastructure of natural gas distributors GasBrasiliano and Comgas, which would justify building pipelines. The Costa Pinto mill is one of those.

Raizen is also assessing other uses for biogas, beyond power generation or biomethane production.

"Producing biofertilizer from biogas has caught our attention," Mussa said. "It would reduce the carbon footprint of the ethanol, both first and second generation, which translates into a higher premium for the ethanol contracts."
