South Korea has exported Hanwoo beef to Cambodia for the first time, according to the Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (Mafra) on 28 August.

This is the first time that Hanwoo beef has been exported to a country in the Mekong region, which is a milestone as it lays the foundation for future exports of Hanwoo beef to neighbouring Southeast Asian countries, Mafra said.

South Korea aims to export 2,000t of Hanwoo beef worth $100mn to Cambodia over the next five years, the ministry said. Mafra also forecasts that total South Korean Hanwoo beef exports could potentially increase to around 1,000 t/yr from 2025, marking an over 20-fold increment from last year's exports of 44t.

The start of exports to Cambodia came long after negotiations began in 2015, with South Korean beef only exported to Hong Kong until 2022. Cambodia is now the third region after Hong Kong and Malaysia, to import South Korean beef.

Cambodia is currently the largest export market for Japanese Wagyu beef, according to Mafra.

Cambodian prime minister Hun Manet met Mafra minister Chung Hwang-Keun on 28 August for discussions centered around enhancing bilateral agricultural trade and establishing a mutually beneficial relationship, with particular emphasis on Hanwoo beef exports.

The exported Hanwoo beef is earmarked for premium distribution channels, primarily focusing on luxury hotels and high-end eateries in Cambodia.

South Korea exported 43.2t of fresh and chilled beef and 124.7t of frozen beef last year, customs data show, reflecting a total of 167.9t of beef exported during the year. None of these supplies went to Cambodia. Beef exports to Cambodia so far this year are at just 0.4t out of a total of 30.3t, according to customs data published on 15 August.

The announcement of Hanwoo beef exports comes after South Korea's first export of halal-certified beef to Malaysia on 29 June. South Korea and Malaysia signed their first contract for beef export in early May. A total of 1,875t is expected to be exported to Malaysia over the next three years under the beef export contract, Mafra said on 14 May.
