PJM coal generation continues to slide

Coal-fired generation in the PJM Interconnection is lower this month than it had been in August 2022, following power plant retirements and a decrease in overall electricity dispatch into the grid.

Generators dispatched 445,708 MW/d of coal power into PJM 1-30 August, compared with 564,056 MW/d in all of August 2022. Coal generation in PJM is also the lowest for any August going back to at least 2016.

The 21pc year-on-year drop in coal power is multiple times larger than the decrease in overall PJM generation, which dipped to 2.61mn MW/d 1-30 August from 2.65mm MW/d in August 2022.

The decrease in coal power at least partly reflects generators' shifts to other fuel sources. Generators had just over 42GW of nameplate coal generating capacity available to dispatch in PJM or on standby in July, down from 47.7GW a year earlier, according to the latest data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). Over the same time period, available natural gas and renewable generating capacity in PJM climbed to 105.1GW and 27.8GW, respectively, from 101.5GW and 25.9GW a year earlier.

EIA's counting of available coal capacity includes the Pleasants power plant in West Virginia, which had been idled on 1 June but resumed operations this week following its acquisition by Omnis Fuel Technologies. Omnis plans to convert the plant to consume hydrogen and use coal as a feedstock for extracting hydrogen.

In August, generators increased dispatch of most fuel sources other than coal. Natural gas-fired power climbed by 4.8pc from a year ago to 1.21mn MW/d in the month through 30 August.

In addition to having more generating capacity available, natural gas was cheaper to purchase and consume this month than it had been in August 2022. Day-ahead prices for natural gas at the Colombia Gas, Appalachia index and Tetco M-3, which are key references for natural gas delivered to generators in PJM, averaged $1.34/mmBtu and $1.254/mmBtu, respectively, in the month through Wednesday. In August 2022, the Colombia Gas, Appalachia index averaged $7.94/mmBtu and Tetco M-3 averaged $8.113/mmBtu.

Nuclear power dispatched into PJM inched up by 0.7pc in the year prior to 770,798 MW/d, and total renewable generation increased to 148,829 MW/d from 129,711 MW/d in all of August 2022.

Within the increase in renewable generation, hydropower increased to 49,805 MW/d from 48,864 MW/d. Dispatch from wind and solar sources increased by 17pc and 36pc, respectively, to 50,398 MW/d and 33,620 MW/d.
