The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) will open an ABS electrification center in Singapore to support maritime decarbonisation projects globally.

The center will employ ABS engineers and technical specialists to assist in electrification projects for stakeholders in the marine industry globally, including shipowners and shipyards. But ABS did not disclose details on the timeline for the development of the centre.

The center will work closely on projects and initiatives from Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority (MPA). The MPA earlier this year stated that all new harbour craft operating in the port of Singapore will have to be fully electric, be capable of using B100 biofuel, or be compatible with net-zero fuels such as hydrogen.

"While many in the shipping industry will be equipped to use alternative fuels, additional alternative energy options, particularly electrification, are needed to help the industry achieve net zero by 2050," said ABS' president and chief operating officer, John McDonald.

ABS will bring its expertise to develop "emerging battery technologies, fuel cells and shore power connection technologies to understand the risks of electrified vessels and to support infrastructure planning as ports become increasingly electrified and connected," added McDonald.

The centre "complements our efforts to electrify the domestic craft sector, adding to the local knowledge and expertise on evolving electrification technologies and standards," said MPA's chief executive, Teo Eng Dih.
