Cruise company Holland America has equipped its entire fleet with the ability to access onshore power after its vessel Volendam connected to shoreside electricity on 27 September in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The shoreside capability is part of Holland America's strategy to cut its carbon intensity by 20pc by 2026 compared with 2019 levels.

The company's 11 ships can connect to more than 18 ports worldwide that have the shoreside power capability, including Vancouver, New York and Shanghai, China. Other ports like Rotterdam, Netherlands, will be shore power-ready next year and Holland America's vessels will be able to connect there, the company said.

"We look forward to more global ports embracing shore power capability in the future and are ready to work with them to connect," said Holland America chief executive Gus Antorcha. Holland America is a subsidiary of US cruise line company Carnival.

Holland America declined to comment on the amount of conventional marine fuel it is replacing and how many metric tonnes of CO2 it is saving by using shore power.

Shore power, which is also known as cold ironing, cuts emissions by enabling ships to plug into a shoreside electricity source while docked at a port rather than use generators powered by onboard fuel.
