'Robust' travel boosts Delta 3Q earnings

Delta Air Lines today reported an increase in quarterly revenue as "robust" summer travel demand continues into the fourth quarter.

Revenues rose by 11pc in the third quarter from a year earlier to $15.5bn, the company said in earnings released today. While domestic demand was steady, revenue from international travel grew by 35pc compared to the third quarter of 2022.

Business travel continues to increase as companies bring employees back into offices. Delta expects revenue growth of 9-12pc in the fourth quarter compared to the same period of 2022.

Fuel expense was down by 12pc from the third quarter in 2022. Delta paid an average $2.76/USG in the three months ended September 2023, a 23pc decrease from a year earlier.

Delta's third quarter profit rose by 59pc to $1.1bn from the same period last year, but was down from the $1.8bn in profit reported in the second quarter this year.

Global air traffic was at 96pc of pre Covid-19 pandemic levels in August, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said in a report released this month.
