Indonesia’s Tangguh LNG train 3 ships first cargo

BP has shipped its first cargo from the new 3.8mn t/yr liquefaction train at its Tangguh LNG terminal in Indonesia's west Papua.

The cargo is to be delivered to Indonesia's state-owned power utility PLN. BP's 75pc share of production from the third train is sold to PLN, with Japanese utility Kansai Electric taking the other 25pc.

The start-up of the third train takes its total capacity to 11.4mn t/yr. This makes Tangguh the second-largest liquefaction terminal in the country after the 11.5mn t/yr Bontang LNG in east Kalimantan. The expanded Tangguh facility is expected to account for over a third of Indonesian gas production, according to BP.

The Indonesian government in December 2022 granted BP a 20-year extension to 2055 to its production-sharing contract at the Tangguh gas field, which feeds the LNG plant.

The third Tangguh liquefaction train was initially supposed to start up in late 2019 before being delayed to the end of 2023. BP and Indonesia's upstream regulator SKK Migas were previously targeting first production in September.

BP's Tangguh expansion project also included construction of two offshore platforms, 13 new production wells, an LNG loading facility and supporting infrastructure.
