Japanese refinery Eneos has halted refining operations at its 141,000 b/d Sakai plant for unknown reasons.

The Sakai plant was shut on 16 October with the restart schedule still unclear, while oil product delivery operations are normal, according to the company. The plant had a scheduled maintenance during 17 May-30 August which took longer than originally scheduled, and it had halted operations again during 4-18 September because of technical issues.

The current shutdown would last 1-2 weeks, according to a trader.

Eneos permanently closed its 120,000 b/d Wakayama refinery on 16 October on the back of shrinking domestic oil product demand. The firm's refining capacity has now fallen to 1.62mn b/d with nine refineries, about half of Japan's total of 3.21mn b/d.

The company's 150,000 b/d Mizushima A plant has also begun a turnaround from 1 September.
