Cop: Indonesia’s Pertamina aims to progress CCS plans

Indonesian state-owned oil firm Pertamina said today it is aiming to progress its carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiatives to help decarbonise its operations, as it intends to increase its oil and gas production.

CCS is important for Pertamina as it is a state-owned enterprise which is mandated to increase production of oil and gas, said Oki Muraza, Pertamina's senior vice-president of research and technology on 2 December at the Cop 28 UN climate summit.

Indonesia and other emerging economies have problems with capital and have to generate capital by increasing their fossil fuel production, said Muraza. CCS would allow the firm to continue increasing output and achieve net zero in its operations by 2060.

Pertamina is currently studying the storage capacity and injection of CO2 into suitable sites. Some potential sites include the Asri basin in Java with an estimated CO2 storage capacity of up to 3bn tonnes, the Kutai basin in East Kalimantan with 270mn t, central Sumatra with up to 100mn t and south Sumatra with 29mn t.

The firm has conducted its first successful CO2 injection at the Jatibarang oil field in west Java, and intends to attempt a second injection on 7 December at the Sukowati field in east Java, he said.

“We have a lot of natural gas sites contaminated by CO2, so having CO2 utilisation or storage in Java or surrounding Java island will be very strategic in order to monetise our natural gas.”

A potential project that the firm is looking at is the construction of a 35km pipeline from the Jambaran-Tiung-Biru gas field to the Sukowati field. “If this happens, this will be the first CO2 cluster in Indonesia,” he said, without providing any timelines for this potential development.

But regulatory frameworks need to be established for things to progress, as many things are not defined yet, said Muraza.

Pertamina's oil and gas output in 2022 reached 967,000 b/d of oil equivalent (boe/d), up by 8pc on the year.
