Indonesia’s Pertamina seeks rare term jet fuel for 2024

Indonesia's state-owned refiner Pertamina is seeking rare term supplies of jet fuel for next year to stock up ahead of planned downtime at its 260,000 b/d Balikpapan refinery.

Pertamina issued a mini term tender to buy at least one 200,000 bl cargo each month between January and March for delivery to Jakarta, according to tender documents seen by Argus.

Jet fuel prices will be based on either the average of Argus' Singapore jet-kerosine assessments or Platts' Singapore jet-kerosine assessments, whichever is lower. Pertamina has started using Argus' jet-kerosine pricing in its jet fuel tenders since October.

Pertamina last sought term A-1 jet fuel for delivery in the first half of 2019, Argus' tender records show.

Pertamina's latest term requirement is because of planned downtime at its Balikpapan refinery, according to sources close to the refiner. The refinery in east Kalimantan will suspend operations for an upgrading project in the first quarter of next year, which will leave Pertamina short of jet fuel supplies. The upgrade will raise the refinery's production capacity to 360,000 b/d.

Pertamina has been buying jet fuel through spot tenders as and when needed, sources close to the refiner said. It last bought a 200,000 bl spot jet fuel cargo for December delivery, with the price to be based on either the average of Argus or Platts' Singapore jet fuel assessments, whichever is lower.
