Japanese power producer Jera is partnering Indonesia's state-owned energy firm Pertamina to co-operate on exploring building LNG, hydrogen and ammonia value chains.
Jera and Pertamina signed an initial agreement on on 15 December to examine LNG, hydrogen and ammonia shipping, enhancing operations and maintenance of LNG terminals, taking advantage of their LNG value chains to seek new opportunities, as well as development of carbon capture, utilisation and storage businesses. Jera may also consider trading LNG with Pertamina and investing in hydrogen and ammonia terminals in the future.
The partners will discuss further details, including schedules, the various grades of hydrogen and ammonia, what to use the fuels for, how to use captured carbon dioxide (CO2) and where in Indonesia to store the CO2.
Jera has been involved in Indonesia's decarbonisation, agreeing in 2021 to help create a roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality of the power sector. Indonesia has relied heavily on coal-fired power generation plants and is facing the dilemma between rapid economic growth and reining in its carbon emissions.
