Japanese refiner and petrochemical producer Idemitsu has started commercial operations of a 9,000 t/yr polystyrene (PS)-based engineering plastics plant in Malaysia's Johor state.

Idemitsu announced on 18 December that the plant's start-up in Malaysia last month has doubled the company's output capacity of its PS-based engineering plastics called syndiotactic PS. Idemitsu also has a 9,000 t/yr plant in east Japan's Chiba prefecture.

Syndiotactic PS plastics are used for electric vehicle (EV) parts, home appliances and kitchen utilities, as they are light and resilient to heat and chemicals. The company decided to build the new plant to secure stable production and expecting demand growth in southeast Asia, especially for EVs and kitchen utilities. Idemitsu chose Malaysia as an additional production site as it plans to buy feedstock styrene monomer (SM) from its subsidiary Idemitsu SM Malaysia, whose 240,000 t/yr SM plant is located next to the new syndiotactic PS project. The company did not disclose how much SM is needed to manufacture 9,000 t/yr of syndiotactic PS.

Idemitsu has rationalized part of its petrochemical business. The company decided to withdraw from producing bisphenol-A by October 2024 because of intensifying competition with Asian producers and oversupply.
