Neste launches SAF purchase scheme

Finnish biofuel producer Neste has introduced a scheme to make it easier for companies to procure sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The scheme, called Neste Impact, will help companies procure large amounts of SAF by calculating their reduction needs on a tailored basis, and by providing paperwork from a third party provider. This paperwork will verify the CO2 reduction and allow the claiming of this against sustainability targets.

This book-and-claim approach will ensure the use of SAF as a replacement for jet fuel, but the SAF to be sold will not be used to meet fuel mandates or regulatory requirements — like those outlined under the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) — and would rather meet additional reductions in the aviation industry, Neste said.

SAF production to expand

This scheme comes as Neste plans to ramp up renewables production.

It has plans to raise its overall renewable products production capacity by 1.3mn t/yr and capacity at Rotterdam will reach 2.7mn t/yr as a result. SAF production capacity at Rotterdam will reach 1.2mn t/yr, it said. Neste wants to start up the new production line in 2026.

The company expects to conduct maintenance at its Rotterdam facility in the third quarter.
