USGC renewable feedstocks prices hit new lows in 2024

Renewable feedstocks prices have hit their lowest levels in 2024 since reaching an all-time high in 2022, amid pressure from D4 RIN credits, LCFS credits and slower demand.

Used cooking oil (UCO) prices in the US Gulf coast closed as low as 38¢/lb on 5 January this year, recovering slightly since then to close at 41.5¢/lb last on 11 March. UCO has lost more than half of its value from its all-time high in 88¢/lb in March 2022.

The EPA's recordkeeping requirements asking producers to possess records of the origin point of UCO pressured the market initially, along with a large volume of UCO imports into the US from Asia. Import volumes continue to affect the local demand for UCO, while new biofuel plants continue to face operational challenges, adding additional pressure in the market.

D4 RIN credits for 2024 have dropped by 68pc since Argus started assessing that value in April 2023, to close last at 48¢/RIN on 11 March 2024 as credit generation reached a record 7.69bn in 2023.

Oversupply of D4 RIN credits, along with growing inventory of LCFS credits, which were at a record 20.6mn t based on most recent data from California Air Resources Board (CARB), have prompted weakness in traded credit values, squeezing production margins for biofuel producers.

Chevron REG recently announced the closing of its two biodiesel plants in the Midwest, succumbing to the pressure from market conditions.

Distillers corn oil (DCO) prices closed at 46.5¢/lb on 11 March, after touching a low of 46¢/lb on 1 March. DCO prices have closely tracked US soybean oil futures, which have dropped by almost 50pc to 46.64¢/lb from an all-time high of 90.60¢/lb on 28 April 2022. Projections for a bigger Argentinian soybean crop for 2023-24 marketing year, along with slower demand from renewable diesel producers, are a few factors for recent losses in CBOT futures.

Prices for bleached fancy tallow (BFT) prices have dropped to 41¢/lb, shedding half of their value from an all-time high of 80.5¢/lb on 2 September 2022.
