Singapore’s B24 sales hit five-month high in March

Consumption of bio-blended very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO), or B24, in Singapore during March hit the highest level in the past five months, supported by the return in demand from shipowners for alternative marine fuels.

B24 consumption was at 66,000t in March, according to data from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), more than doubling on the year, and up by more than fourfold from 15,600t in February. This is also the highest since October 2023, when the monthly consumption of B24 hit a record-high of 76,800t.

B24 is made of 24pc used cooking oil methyl ester (Ucome) and 76pc VLSFO.

There was a plunge in B24 demand between November 2023 and February this year because shipowners withdrew and were reluctant to pay the premium for B24 compared to traditional fossil fuels like VLSFO.

Argus assessed B24 prices in Singapore on a delivered on board (dob) basis in the past year at $803.95/t on average, with VLSFO prices at $621.39/t during the same period. The premium of B24 to VLSFO prices was at $182.56/t on an average in the past year, according to Argus data.

B24 consumption in the first quarter of this year was at 126,900t, which was still higher by 49pc compared with 85,000t during the same period in 2023. This highlights that consumption growth for this emerging fuel could still be on a positive trajectory, despite the temporary slump over the past several months.

Demand for LNG for bunkering also hit a fresh high in March, with sales reaching 38,600t, up from 26,900t in the previous month.

LNG bunkering in Singapore has picked up since the start of 2024 as industry participants are testing the use of LNG as a transition fuel for dual-fuelled ships that will be ready in the next two years, said market participants.

VLSFO consumption dipped on the month to 2.4mn t, compared with 2.5mn t in February. Demand for high sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) in March remained steady on the month at 1.6mn t. Marine gasoil (MGO) consumption was at 310,000t in March, up by 4.4pc on the month.

Total bunker consumption in Singapore was at 4.44mn t in March, down by 1.4pc compared with February, according to the MPA.

Singapore bunker consumption in 2023 hit an all-time high of 51.8mn t, further entrenching its position as the largest bunkering hub in the world.
