French winter crop conditions remain poor

France's 2024-25 wheat and barley crop conditions remain poor compared with previous seasons, according to agricultural and sea products agency FranceAgriMer.

And weather over the coming week may offer little respite because of forecasts for continued rainfall and below-average temperatures, according to French state weather agency MeteoFrance.

Wheat

Nearly all of France's 2024-25 wheat crop reached the heading stage in early June but the crop conditions remain considerably worse than a year ago. Wheat areas rated "good-to-excellent" were lower than at any point in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons at 62pc. Soft wheat areas nationally rated "poor-to-very poor" did not show any improvement from 14pc in late May.

Barley

The 2024-25 winter barley crop is in a similar condition to the 2022-23 crop in June but doing worse than in 2023-24. Conditions were largely unchanged, with crops rated "good-to-excellent" shrinking by one percentage point on the week to 63pc as of 2 June.

Corn

National corn planting progress is at 90pc, behind the pace for the 2023-24 crop, when the equivalent area had been planted by mid-May. A delayed start to the campaign has weighed on development pace.

The percentage of planted corn areas rated "good to excellent" stood at 80pc as of 2 June, compared with 88pc a year ago. National crop areas rated "poor-to-very poor" were at 4pc.
