The state of Louisiana in partnership with two global maritime stakeholders will construct a new Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) container terminal that should significantly increase the state's import and export capacity.

New Jersey-based Ports America, Switzerland-based Mediterranean Shipping, and the state of Louisiana will build the $1.8bn Louisiana International Terminal (LIT) in St Bernard Parish. The two stakeholders have committed a combined $800mn towards the project while state and federal funding will cover the balance. The first berth is expected to open by 2028.

The "state-of-the-art" container facility will manage about 2mn twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs)/yr once fully built and should be in operation by 2050, Port NOLA said.

The terminal will aid in Louisiana's agricultural exports, which includes poultry, bulk grains, grain products, edible oils and likely generate economic growth by allowing more vessels to move through area.

Port Nola moved a total of 20,500 barges during 2023, the highest since the service started in 2016. On average the location moves about 30,000 TEUs/yr.
