South Korea impeaches acting president Han Duck-soo

  • 24/12/27

South Korea has impeached acting president and prime minister Han Duck-soo today, less than two weeks after it impeached president Yoon Suk Yeol, creating greater political uncertainty.

The motion to impeach Han passed with 192 votes, according to the National Assembly, with deputy prime minister and finance minister Choi Sang-mok now the acting president and acting prime minister respectively.

"I respect the decision of the National Assembly and to avoid further confusion and uncertainty, I will suspend my duties in accordance with relevant laws," Han said on 27 December.

Main opposition Democratic Party (DP) introduced the motion to impeach Han after he refused to appoint justices to the Constitutional Court of Korea. This shows that Han "will not fulfil his constitutional duties", DP's floor leader Park Chan-dae said on 27 December.

The country impeached Yoon on 14 December after he declared martial law on 3 December. The Constitutional Court held the first hearing on Yoon's impeachment on 27 December, and will make a final decision within six months on whether to remove him from office or restore his powers.
