Argentina wheat planting off to a slow start

Argentinian farmers are already behind last year's wheat planting pace during the first week of the season, the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange (Bage) reported.

Wheat growers finished planting on 3.4pc of the 6.7mn hectares (ha) that Bage estimates will be sown with the grain, the Exchange said in its report on the week through 21 May. That was 10 percentage points behind the same date last year and 4 percentage points behind the five-year average.

Planting was delayed partly by unusually heavy rain in Buenos Aires province, where muddy conditions can make it difficult for equipment to enter fields. Work could be impeded further is there is more rain.

Meanwhile, soil moisture levels in some areas in northeastern Argentina are low, though any rain in those areas during the planting window could spur farmers to sow a larger area with wheat, Bage said.

Bage's estimate for the area to be planted with wheat is lower than that of Argentina's Economy Ministry, which foresees an area of 6.9mn ha, and the Rosario Board of Trade (RBT), which says the area planted could reach 7.2mn ha. If the higher number is correct and yields are just average, Argentina could produce its second-biggest wheat crop ever, RBT said last week.

Soybean harvest slows

Argentina's soybean harvest slowed again during the week, after leaping forward in the first two weeks of this month as farmers took advantage of dry weather, Bage said.

The soybean harvest was slowed again by downpours in northern Buenos Aires province. Growers were able to finish work on 9.4pc of the estimated area to be harvested during the week, bringing the total harvest progress to 74.3pc complete. Producers harvested 20pc of the area the previous week and 21pc of the area the week before that.

The average national yield reached 3.1 metric tonnes (t) per ha in the past week. In Cordoba province the average yield reached 3.4t/ha as the harvest there approaches its end. Bage maintained its forecast for a soybean crop of 50mn t.

Corn harvest remains behind pace

The heavy rains in northern Buenos Aires province brought Argentina's corn harvest to a near-standstill as well, advancing just 1.6 percentage points to 38.8pc finished.

The average national yield was 8.1t/ha. Bage left its corn crop forecast unchanged at 49mn t.
