European naphtha firms on crude contamination

European naphtha crack spreads against crude have risen sharply in recent days, partly because of fears of off-spec naphtha produced by refineries that have processed chloride-contaminated Azeri BTC crude, a staple grade for European and Mediterranean refiners.

The northwest European naphtha cargo crack spread to North Sea Dated crude also strengthened, to a discount of $6.14/bl, the narrowest since May, compared with a discount of nearly $10/bl earlier in July.

Elevated levels of organic chlorides in Azeri BTC crude are forcing some refiners to reject affected cargoes, making portions of naphtha output off-spec and reducing overall marketable supply, pressuring prices.

Some market participants said refiners such as Sonatrach's Augusta site may have already processed contaminated barrels and potentially produced off-spec naphtha as a result.

Naphtha produced from crude high in chlorides has limited use in petrochemical steam crackers and gasoline blending, sources said. This has made on-spec material scarcer and pushed prices higher.

Multiple Mediterranean refiners, including Italy's Eni and Algeria's Sonatrach, received BTC Blend cargoes with elevated chloride content this month. Processing such cargoes comes with risk. "It's not like you put chlorides in today and the refinery is damaged tomorrow, it's more like you're worried about a trend," one refinery source said.

Refiners are cautious because chlorides in crude can react to form acids during processing, posing long-term corrosion risks to refining machinery.

Azeri BTC Blend is typically the fourth-largest crude grade delivered to Mediterranean refineries, averaging 245,000 b/d in the first half of the year, excluding volumes to Trieste. Most cargoes go to Italian refiners and Croatia's Omisalj terminal, with occasional deliveries to France and Spain.

Chlorides rise to the top of the distillation column, affecting the naphtha cut mostly, one market participant said. BTC pipeline shareholder BP confirmed today that action is continuing to resolve the contamination problem. Chlorides were present at the Ceyhan terminal, but clean-up efforts were underway and loadings from unaffected storage tanks had resumed by 24 July, BP said.
