Indonesia’s sulphur demand displaces sulphuric acid

The commissioning of new sulphur burners in Indonesia has pushed some buyers to switch to procuring sulphur instead of sulphuric acid.

Sulphuric acid is mainly used to produce battery materials like nickel sulphate and mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) in regions like Sulawesi and Obi island and can be obtained through the combustion of sulphur. For most sulphur burners, 1t of sulphur produces around 3t of sulphuric acid.

Metals producer QMB New Energy Materials started up a 660,000 t/yr sulphur burner in February, and is expected to commission another 1mn t/yr burner by the end of the year. Stainless steel producer Tsingshan is also expected to start two sulphur burners in Weda Bay and Morowali this year, which will add an additional 5mn t/yr of capacity.

Indonesia's sulphur imports in January-June this year surged by 74pc on the year to 2.59mn t, while sulphuric acid imports over the same period fell by 48pc on the year to 298,100t, latest Global Trade Tracker (GTT) data show.

The bulk of the increase comes from Middle East suppliers like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, from which imports rose by 70pc and 84pc on the year to 889,600t and 525,000t respectively. Additionally, tighter import requirements for sulphuric acid have also limited import activity and pushed buyers towards sulphur, which is not subject to the same stringencies.

Sulphuric acid imports are likely to continue on a downtrend in the next few years, with more projects like Phase 3 of QMB New Energy Materials' expansion and Huali Nickel Indonesia expected to add more sulphur burning capacity.

But weak nickel prices may force metals projects to postpone future expansions.
