India will raise its LNG import capacity to 66.7mn t/yr by 2030 from the existing 52.7mn t, oil minister Hardeep Singh Puri said in a post on social media platform X today.

It is expected to reach the target with the addition of two more plants, he added, without providing more details.

There are a total of eight LNG import terminals operating in the country. State-run LNG terminal operator Petronet LNG's 17.5mn t/yr Dahej import terminal in India's west coast has the highest capacity utilisation at 92pc as of June, while the rest remain within a range of 20-30pc, the latest oil ministry report show.

Petronet LNG is set to commission an additional 5mn t/yr capacity at its Dahej terminal by the end of the year, chief executive Akshay Kumar Singh said in July.

Its 5mn t/yr Gopalpur terminal project is expected to be completed by 2028.

Indian state-run gas distributor Gail's 5mn t/yr Dabhol LNG terminal is also expected to double its capacity by 2030, having completed construction of the breakwater facility which will help the firm to operate throughout the year.

India's privately-owned H-Energy is seeking a 6mn t/yr floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) to be delivered in October 2025-February 2026 in Jaigarh, Maharashtra.

Indian developer Swan Energy is also likely to commission its 5mn t/yr Jafrabad FSRU this year.

India's gas regulator Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) in an earlier report had pegged India's regasification capacity to be around 87mn t/yr by 2030, which is higher than Puri's expectation. PNGRB forecasts LNG import demand to hit 56mn t/yr by 2030.

New Delhi plans to make the country a gas-based economy, with the share of natural gas in its primary energy mix targeted to rise to 15pc by 2030, from around 6pc in 2023.
