Ukrainian farmers have begun the 2026-27 winter grain harvest with record early yields for wheat and barley, supporting optimistic production forecasts for the season.
As of 3 July, the economy ministry's data show farmers have harvested 251,400 hectares (ha) of grains and pulses for total output of 1.02mn t. Wheat harvesting has reached 64,130ha, producing 264,610t at an average yield of 4.13 t/ha. The barley harvest has reached 171,660ha, with 719,400t collected at 4.19 t/ha. Market participants said official figures probably reflect a reporting lag, with real-time field progress estimated to be further ahead based on recent feedback from agricultural enterprises and farmers.
High initial yields support recent upward revisions to production estimates. Argus projects Ukraine's 2026-27 wheat output at 24.1mn t in mid-June, driven by a strong recovery in southern and eastern regions.
While the harvest is at an early stage, market attention has shifted to the final quality split. Initial reports are encouraging, with farmers in southern and central oblasts indicating a higher share of milling-grade wheat than at the same time last year.
A brief heatwave last week does not appear to have caused significant damage to the mature winter grain crop. But forecasts for 6-12 July point to unsettled conditions. Active cyclonic activity will bring widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and lower temperatures in much of Ukraine, the latest forecasts show. The combination of moisture and lower-than-average temperatures could cause localised harvest delays and affect grain quality through higher moisture content and the risk of lodging.
The expected rainfall will benefit spring crops, including corn, sunflower seed (SFS) and soybeans. Market participants expect the additional soil moisture to support yield potential for these crops.
