Johannesburg, 2 June (Argus) —

South Africa
The arrival of winter weather has scuppered activity on the bitumen market in South Africa. The torrential rain that signals winter's arrival is “causing havoc” according to one source, preventing road building activity. But the resultant slack demand for bitumen has done little to dampen price increases. Although the bottom of the barrel has been noticeably lagging the rapid increases in headline crude prices, asphalt prices in the Cape area of the country are up by 150 rand/t ($19.45) while up-country prices have risen by R250-280/t.
