Falling Asian jet fuel prices lower airlines’ costs

Singapore, 1 June (Argus) — Several countries across Asia have lowered their domestic prices of jet fuel by 4-7pc, reflecting international market trends and easing the cost pressure on airlines operating in the region.

China's economic planning agency the NDRC announced yesterday that it would cut the ex-factory prices of jet fuel in the country by 210-230 yuan/t ($30.74-33.67/t), or around 4pc, effective today. The seven grades of jet fuel will now sell for Yn5,330-5,940/t.

In India, state-owned oil companies have cut prices of jet fuel by more than 7pc to around Rs 6,270/bl ($133/bl), effective 1 June. This was the first cut after six consecutive price hikes since 1 March. In neighbouring Pakistan, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority reduced jet fuel prices by around 5pc to Rs 8,354-8,787/bl ($97.81-102.88/bl), depending on the specification of the fuel.

The price revisions came on the back of a fall in international jet fuel prices from a high of $99.25/bl in early May to around $80-85/bl by the end of the month.

Domestic jet fuel prices in many Asian countries are not adjusted daily. In China, prices of refined products are supposed to be revised when the 22-day moving average of a basket of crude values changes by more than 4pc. In India, price changes are usually revised only once every two weeks.

The latest price changes are likely to bring some relief to airlines wary of rising fuel expenses. Jet fuel typically accounts for 30-40pc of an airline's operating expenses, although this is often higher in India because of various taxes levied on the fuel.
